Summer nights 08/09
Sheer fabrics This summer it's more about covering the skin subtly than a brazen attempt to reveal it. Draping tops and dresses in fabrics like chiffon are very desirable for evening. And if you want to go boldly on trend, try sheer skirts, pants or coats in stiff fabrics like organza or taffeta. But avoid figure hugging sheers that give away too much - it's all about elegance. Strappy sandals, bejewelled thongs, t-bar and sling back heels and flats in metallic's - silver, pewter, bronze - team up beautifully with new season floating fabrics. We love Zakia and Salomeh by Pierre Fontaine (pictured right). And bejewelled kitten heels, Fantasy for easy chic.
Boudoir trend Underwear becomes outerwear this summer. Moving away from corsetry and structured tight-fitting forms, the new season trend flows, drapes and falls in seductive and feminine fashion. As seen on the runways of Miu Miu and Christian Dior. Invest in delicate pieces where soft femininity meets 1930s glamour and independence. Camisoles and slip dresses in silk, satin and charmeuse with lace details. Avoid anything too vampish or over-the-top burlesque. We love Zelona by Pierre Fontaine and Katlyn in satin by Zoom (pictured right). Sandrine in satin by Pierre Fontaine and Donatella by Tony Bianco in tulle are also elegant choices.
Art Deco inspired The elegance and sophistication of the Art Deco era (1930s-40s) is also huge for spring/summer. Think flowing silk and satin a la Keira Knightley's famous green dress in Atonement. And geometric designs on buckles, brooches and prints. As seen on the runways of Rodarte and Marc Jacobs. Team with red lipstick and 1940s screen starlet waves for an authentic feel, or with patent leathers and rock-chic bed-hair for a more modern take. We love Taylor by Simona Ricci in black patent and Kyla in black satin or rose gold by Zoom (both pictured right) or Emerald is another great choice with it's geometric design.
Tuxedo glamour The tuxedo trend is hotting up for Spring / Summer 2008. Able to transcend the boundaries between casual and evening-wear. It's all about slim-cut dinner jackets in luxe fabrics and blouses in soft feminine fabrics as seen on the runways of Jens Laugesen and Miu Miu. From bone to black, spring suits stick to the neutral palette. But keep those heels high. This look isn't about looking masculine, it's about a great fit and a fearless approach to dressing, without the appearance of the old power suit. We love Gina in black patent by Pierre Fontaine and Erika by Tony Bianco (pictured right)
1920's revival Loose-fitting dresses with embellishments like fringing and beading, particularly in vintage styles, take over from the more mod minis and smocks of the past season. Drop-waists aren't a requirement in 2008, where waists are otherwise emphasised and revered, and the trend will populate into a variety of different fits and cuts. Mix up this look up with modern accessories like gladiator heels, patents and shoots. We love leather gladiators Pacific and Wave by Siren (pictured right) for a sexy, modern new season look. And Centre and Waiger by Siren in black leather.
Weddings and balls Expect to see flirty sheer fabrics, draping, ruffles, ruching, couture details, pretty prints, and wispy sheer overlays at weddings and balls this spring/summer. Belted gowns, ruffled skirts, and sexy column styles with risque bustiers inspired by couture designers, create fresh silhouettes. Special occasions call for beautiful shoes and pleated satins and sparkling diamontes lead the way. We love Becky by Clarice and Naira by Pierre Fontaine (pictured right). Shoe Show has just launched a Weddings and Balls page on our website including bridal, bridemaids and ball shoes.
